Deck Stairs, Steps, and Landing

Cut the piece of fascia to the desired width, mark the plumb cut and the flush cut. Measure back from the edge of the deck board 2 ¼” for the fastener. Place the end of the strap tie even with the top of the stair header and bend the strap tie at the bevel of the stair header. This will allow the strap tie to follow the contour of the stair stringer. Check with your local municipality for approved attachments in that area. Line the stringers up with the marks and make sure the stringers are flush with the top of the rim board.

To flush the stringer with the top of the rim board, use a 3” exterior wood screw and insert it into the top of the stringer approximately 1 ½” back from the end of the stringer. Use a hammer and place the claw between the fastener and the stringer while the head of the hammer is on top of the rim board. Pry on the handle of the hammer and raise the stringer into place so that it is flush with the top of the rim board. Fasten the stringer in place and remove the 3” exterior wood screw.

Types of Chairs Every DIY Home Designer Should Know

You many need a dedicated set of stairs or multiple sets to distinctpurpose areas on your deck. Plus, given the durable nature of red clay brick, these steps can weather the elements and frequent foot traffic with grace. As an added bonus, they pair seamlessly with various deck materials, ensuring a cohesive look.

A magnesium float is a flat piece of magnesium (sometimes aluminum is used) with a handle. It allows you to float concrete at the desired pressure and angle. Magnesium floats come in a range of lengths and widths, so once you have completed the measurements for your landing pad, you can find a suitable size. Start by measuring the total rise and then divide it by the estimated number of risers you worked out in Step 2. This result gives you the exact height of each riser, which should be between 4 and 7 ¾ inches. If the riser height exceeds this range, add or remove a riser from the total and redo the calculations.

Also, keep in mind that putting throw pillows could be an excellent way to bring splashes of bright color. Imagine yourself sipping a warm cup of coffee in the morning with a book, sitting on the deck with lush hanging plants, bright rugs, and a cool breeze. Keep in mind that curved designs require a qualified contractor to build. Angled composite steps to patio or lawn landings can be difficult to DIY and may require the help of a contractor. Deck stairs require space immediately in front of the entry to the stairs, as well as a 3’ to 4’ walkway across the deck to and from the stairs. If your deck is higher than 12’, you’ll need to install an intermediate landing between your deck and the ground.

Not only do they enhance aesthetics, but they also provide versatility in design, catering to various landscape orientations and spatial constraints. Dive into the world of three-sided stairs, and let these intriguing formations capture the imagination of every guest who steps onto your deck. Throw in some spotlights, and you’ve got a deck that becomes the highlight of your evening gatherings. With the added bonus of the unique curved design, you’re sure to have a conversation starter at your next backyard gathering. The layout is the same as the support block layout on the top of the stairway. From inside the stairway through the second-stringer, make a mark for one 5” Simpson Strong Tie SDWS Timber screw in the middle of the post and the middle of the stringer width.

Step into comfort

As these stringers are not attached to a newel post they do not need the 5” fasteners that were used on the end stringers. Simpson Strong Tie 3” SDWS Framing screws will be used in this situation. Next, place a piece of the riser material on the front of the stringer and trace all risers.

Step 12: Check That Everything Is Square

However, there’s no reason why composite patio or lawn landing steps can’t be attractive and fashionable as well. To avoid frost heave, footings should be installed at the base of the stringers. You may use a concrete anchor, base plate, and short post to make a firm ground connection once the frost footings are in place.

Knowing what the different components of a stair system are will help you in designing your deck stairs — as well as building them if you’re considering DIY-ing the design. Stringers should not be placed more than 18-inches on center. Therefore, the narrowest staircase allowed by code (36-inches) should have three stringers.

Place the template against the 2x12 with the run side closest to the end of the 2x12. Hold the template against the 2x12 and use a straight edge to follow the line of the bottom tread. Mark the line on the straight edge through the backside of the 2x12. Make sure to extend the line to the edge of the 2x12 for the next step.
